School of Computing Open Lab

The School of Computing provides its students with free access to both Windows PC and Linux based workstations. All software required of each student throughout his or her degree program will be installed on machines in this lab, along with free data storage, unlimited internet and email account access for the duration of their tenure here at USM.

High Performance Visualization Lab

The High Performance Visualization Lab houses two important facilities used by undergraduate, graduate, and faculty researchers. The Access Grid is an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments. These resources allow researchers from all around the Globe to communicate in real-time via voice, video, and data, bridging the geographic gap between entities. The High Performance Visualization Lab also houses many high performance computing environments. The CAVE 3D Immersive Visualization system, along with motion tracking and real-time input allow students and researchers to experience full, immersive three-dimensional environments, and use these tools to further advance our understanding of the science. Also, the lab houses a high performance compute cluster, currently consisting of 44 64-Bit AMD Opteron processors and 48 GB's of memory, connected via extremely low latency InfiniBand interconnects.
